Hegra archaeological site draws visitors to AlUla year-round

The Hegra archaeological site in AlUla is one of the most popular destinations for visitors from across Saudi Arabia and around the world throughout the year, who come to explore its cultural landmarks and the rock formations carved with intricate facades that tell the story of the region’s history.

Hegra holds global significance as the first Saudi site to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognized for its remarkable archaeological and architectural remains that reflect the area’s rich heritage. Evidence of human presence at Hegra dates back to before the first millennium BCE. The site later became a prominent city of the Nabataean Kingdom, whose legacy endures in the rock carvings and inscriptions documenting aspects of social and cultural life during that era.

The site features around 141 rock structures, with 93 adorned with finely carved facades and detailed geometric decorations. These also include inscriptions that provide insights into the social life of ancient communities, showcasing the evolution of architecture, rock carving, and facade design.
