Turbah’s underground dam emerges as eco-tourism haven in southern Turbah

Located about 54 kilometers south of Turbah, Wadi Turbah is home to an underground dam that has transformed the area into a natural oasis, blending water, wild trees, and rock formations. The site has become a retreat for locals and tourists seeking peace and an escape from city crowds.

The dam sits along the course of Wadi Turbah, one of the region’s most renowned valleys. Seasonal floods and the area’s unique landscape have shaped a striking scene where slopes and stone formations intertwine with greenery, creating a dynamic oasis that changes with the seasons and rainfall.

Along the dam’s banks, intricate details emerge: branches overhang parts of the stream, wild plants thrive in the moist environment, and flocks of birds move among the trees or soar overhead. Tour guide Adel Al-Buqami explained that the underground dam serves as a vital escape for Turbah’s residents and visitors during this time of year, thanks to its tranquil atmosphere and open natural setting. Al-Buqami added that the dam’s appeal is enhanced by its rich biodiversity. The water source has fostered the growth of surrounding plants and created a haven for birds and wildlife, making the site both a recreational destination and an environmental asset, and offering a chance to discover Turbah’s natural diversity.

He pointed out that the journey to the dam is an experience in itself, as visitors pass through a variety of landscapes within the governorate before reaching Wadi Turbah, which gradually becomes greener, making the trip part of the adventure.

The dam’s features shift throughout the day: in the morning, bird activity increases and the slopes become more prominent, while in the evening, the sun casts reflections on the water’s surface, revealing the land’s varied colors—an attraction for photography enthusiasts and those seeking contemplation.
