Greenhouses boost sustainable agriculture in Najran

Najran is witnessing significant growth in the use of greenhouses, a leading agricultural technology that enhances sustainability and supports local food security.

The region is home to more than 4,400 greenhouses, producing over 37,000 tons of tomatoes and cucumbers annually, in addition to a variety of other crops such as bell peppers, zucchini, eggplants, okra, strawberries, figs, and leafy greens. These crops receive meticulous care from farmers, who adhere to best agricultural practices in irrigation, fertilization, and regular monitoring.

Greenhouses provide an optimal environment for plant growth by controlling temperature, humidity, ventilation, and lighting. Modern irrigation systems further improve water efficiency and reduce waste. These technologies also protect plants from dust, wind, and minimize exposure to agricultural pests.

Government efforts to support protected agriculture

The Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture’s Najran branch, Mureeh bin Sharaeh Al-Shahrani, stated that greenhouses represent a modern solution for developing the agricultural sector, thanks to their ability to create productive environments that increase efficiency, improve crop quality, conserve water, and reduce the impact of climate fluctuations.

Al-Shahrani noted that the ministry branch continues to encourage farmers to adopt protected agriculture technologies by offering technical guidance and sharing best practices. These efforts aim to boost production and enhance the competitiveness of local agricultural products, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
