Nafi’ah heritage market in Fayfa preserves Jazan mountain culture

The Nafi’ah heritage market in Fayfa, Jazan region, continues to stand as one of the oldest historical markets in the mountainous sector. Established between 1727 and 1737 CE (1140–1150 AH), it has served as a center for trade, social interaction, and cultural exchange for more than three centuries.

Yahya bin Hussein Al-Fayfi explained that the market is considered the first in the mountain sector, serving residents of Fayfa and neighboring villages, as well as visitors from Abu Arish. He noted that recent improvements to the road network have led to a rise in visitor numbers in recent years.

Heritage and architectural features

The market retains its traditional architectural character, with shops lining stone-paved walkways and surrounded by buildings constructed from local stone, reflecting the building styles of Fayfa’s mountains. Shops display pottery, lanterns, coffee-making tools, and old household items, along with traditional clothing, woven baskets, and agricultural products from Fayfa such as Khawlani coffee, natural honey, millet, and local ghee.

Sulaiman Jibran Al-Fayfi pointed out that restoration efforts and the preservation of the market’s heritage elements, along with the revival of traditional crafts, have helped highlight its historical value and strengthen its status as one of Fayfa’s most prominent heritage sites.

The Taleqah tree and local memory

At the heart of the market stands the Taleqah tree, estimated to be over 700 years old and situated more than 2,000 meters above sea level. The tree has long been associated with market days and community gatherings, becoming a symbol of the place and a living memory for generations.

Abduh Al-Makhshami Al-Fayfi, who has spent around 60 years working in the market, added that it still preserves rare heritage items, some over 120 years old, such as lanterns, utensils, and traditional building tools. He noted that these artifacts attract visitors and heritage enthusiasts due to their historical significance.

A vibrant cultural and social role

The role of the Nafi’ah heritage market extends beyond commerce, serving as a vital cultural and social venue. It has hosted meetings, news exchanges, the transmission of knowledge and oral traditions, and has strengthened ties among mountain village residents, making it an integral part of the local community’s history and collective memory.
