Heritage Commission registers 9,586 new sites in national urban heritage record

The Heritage Commission has announced the registration of 9,586 urban heritage sites in the National Register of Urban Heritage over two consecutive phases. The first phase saw 3,000 sites added, followed by an additional 6,586 sites, bringing the total number of registered sites across the Kingdom to 59,586. This effort is part of the Commission’s ongoing work to survey, document, classify, and enhance the protection and preservation of urban heritage assets.

The newly registered sites are distributed across several regions: 169 in Riyadh, 1,755 in Makkah, 23 in Madinah, 13 in Qassim, 19 in the Eastern Province, 4,363 in Asir, 2 in Tabuk, 21 in Hail, 1 in the Northern Borders, 673 in Najran, and 2,547 in Al-Baha.

The Commission emphasized that continuously registering urban heritage assets and updating the national register helps provide legal protection for these sites, organizes their preservation, rehabilitation, and reuse, and supports the integration of their data with urban planning and development efforts. It also enhances the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of the national register, while expanding the use of these assets in cultural, tourism, and sustainable development programs and projects.

The Heritage Commission called on citizens and residents to report unregistered urban heritage sites or any activities that may threaten their integrity through the "Archaeological Report" service at https://contactcenter.moc.gov.sa، via the Commission’s official social media channels, by visiting its branches and offices across the Kingdom, or by contacting the unified security operations center at 911. The Commission stressed the importance of community partnership in discovering, protecting, and preserving the nation’s heritage for future generations.
