Historic Al-Qunfudhah windmill preserves western coast’s architectural legacy

The historic windmill on the coast of Al-Qunfudhah serves as an architectural landmark, narrating chapters from the history of Saudi Arabia’s western coastline. Harnessing the power of the wind and shaping local stone, early inhabitants created a productive system that milled grain and supported the needs of the local community.

Dating back more than two centuries, the windmill stands out as one of the region’s historic landmarks, reflecting the distinctive characteristics of traditional architecture in Al-Qunfudhah. Built in a cylindrical form with a diameter and height of about seven meters each, and walls nearly one meter thick, its construction relied on locally sourced coastal stone known as “al-Satayhi marine stone.”

The windmill’s architectural design reveals accumulated expertise in adapting to the coastal environment. Its cylindrical shape, thick walls, and use of local materials created a structure resilient to the passage of time and environmental factors.
