Study finds boredom, not stress, drives hair-pulling disorder

But previous research has offered mixed evidence, and hair-pulling can also occur when a person is distracted or not fully aware of their actions.

Boredom and fatigue among top influences
The study suggests that low levels of stimulation or energy may play an important role in some hair-pulling episodes. The researchers wrote: "States of low energy may increase susceptibility to urges."
This idea is based on a theory that repetitive behaviors can help regulate internal stimulation levels, making hair-pulling more likely during boredom or low arousal.
The researchers added: "The consistent predictive role of boredom and fatigue, in particular, suggests that models focusing solely on emotional dysfunction may be insufficient."
