Common diabetes drug metformin may slow aging, researchers say

Researchers have found that metformin, one of the most commonly prescribed medications for type 2 diabetes, may help slow some aspects of biological aging.

According to recent studies, the mechanisms of metformin may be more complex than previously understood, prompting scientists to investigate its potential effects on aging and longevity, Russia Today reported.

One of the drug’s key effects involves activating an enzyme that plays a crucial role in regulating cellular energy. Metformin may also inhibit a pathway that supports autophagy, the process by which cells remove and recycle damaged or unnecessary components.

These effects could help reduce oxidative stress, improve insulin sensitivity, and preserve cell function—processes linked to better health as people age.

Preliminary findings suggest the drug may influence certain epigenetic changes associated with aging, and could alter gut bacteria composition in ways that reduce inflammation and improve gut and metabolic health.
