As the sun sets during the summer months, Jeddah transforms into a vibrant urban scene, where the lights of towers and buildings blend with the movement of residents and visitors along the waterfronts, parks, walking tracks, and shopping centers. Towers and buildings along King Abdulaziz Road are adorned with colorful lights, creating a visual spectacle that highlights Jeddah’s urban identity and draws the attention of passersby and park-goers. Evening activity increases as daytime temperatures rise, with many people preferring to spend time in shopping malls, waterfront areas, and public parks after dark.

Jeddah’s distinctive nighttime scene is not limited to lighting alone. It is shaped by artistic and engineering standards set by the Jeddah Municipality, which designs lighting systems for parks and public facilities to ensure appropriate illumination levels, long operational life, and low maintenance costs. Special materials resistant to corrosion and humidity are used in waterfront areas to ensure asset sustainability and enhance operational efficiency.

Technical standards enhance lighting efficiency and safety

Mohammed bin Obaid Al-Buqami, spokesperson for the Jeddah Municipality, explained the municipality’s commitment to the "Street Lighting Rehabilitation Program" under the Ministry of Energy’s "Tarsheed" initiative. The program aims to improve energy efficiency, standardize technical specifications for LED lighting, and develop unified street classification standards, in cooperation with the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization.

Al-Buqami noted that lighting standards focus on using high-efficiency units and weather-resistant materials, while adhering to the Saudi Building Code, electrical requirements, and safety and quality standards. He added that lighting is subject to precise photometric studies to ensure balanced light distribution, minimize dark spots or excessive overlap, and limit light pollution. These measures enhance the beauty of public facilities, improve safety, and encourage nighttime sports and recreational activities.
