Scented cleaning products linked to hidden air pollution, experts warn

Researchers at Purdue University have warned that scented cleaning products can produce hidden pollutants that penetrate the bloodstream and reach the lungs.

The researchers added that cleaning products containing essential or synthetic fragrances may pose a risk to indoor air quality and public health, according to Russia Today.

They explained that these products contain compounds that easily react with ozone indoors, leading to the formation of particles that can penetrate lung tissue and enter the bloodstream.

The experts attributed their findings to the fact that while cleaning removes germs from surfaces, it can also generate invisible air pollution that people unknowingly inhale.

They noted that air may appear clean and smell pleasant, but could be contaminated with invisible particles. The experts recommend using unscented cleaning products, ventilating rooms during cleaning, and avoiding ozone-generating devices marketed as air purifiers.
