Global focus on UNESCO AI ethics forum set for Riyadh in 2026

Representatives from 194 countries are closely watching the outcomes of the fourth UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, which will be hosted by Saudi Arabia in Riyadh from September 14 to 17, 2026.

The forum will bring together ministers, experts, and global policymakers to discuss key issues related to AI governance and the implementation of ethical principles. Participants will also explore ways to strengthen international cooperation in building regulatory frameworks that promote the responsible and safe use of AI technologies, ensuring the protection of human rights in the digital world.

Forum themes and sessions

The event will review the progress made by member states in implementing UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence since its adoption in 2021, as well as the institutional, financial, and technical challenges of translating ethical principles into practical policies and actions. The forum will also address funding for AI governance, capacity building, and enhancing accountability in the use of AI technologies in government services.

With more than 100 speakers across over 30 sessions and workshops, the forum will highlight the Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) and its role in measuring countries' preparedness for responsible AI adoption. It will also discuss ways to increase the participation of different countries and regions in shaping international frameworks and standards related to AI ethics.

Forum organization and Saudi Arabia's role

The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) is organizing the forum in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and in collaboration with the International Center for AI Research and Ethics (ICAIRE). This marks the first time the forum will be held in an Arab country, coordinated with the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.

Saudi Arabia's hosting of the forum reflects its commitment to supporting international efforts to promote the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence, contributing to the development of governance frameworks that benefit people and societies, and advancing sustainable development goals in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
