Iran to raise gasoline prices for high-volume consumers

Iran plans to raise gasoline prices for consumers whose monthly usage exceeds 110 liters, starting Tuesday, in a move aimed at addressing growing economic pressures caused by war and US sanctions.

Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said the price for the first two quotas, totaling 110 liters, will remain unchanged. However, the price for any fuel purchased beyond this amount will rise to 100,000 Iranian rials per liter—about four US cents at the current free market rate—according to statements reported by state media.

Mohajerani clarified that the decision will not affect consumers who use 110 liters or less per month. Car owners will still be able to buy 60 liters at 15,000 rials per liter, plus an additional 50 liters at 30,000 rials per liter.

The measure comes as the Iranian government seeks to manage rising fuel demand amid ongoing economic challenges.

The government had previously considered raising gasoline prices—which are among the lowest in the world—but postponed the decision due to concerns over potential new protests, following widespread demonstrations in 2019 triggered by fuel price hikes.

In December, Iran partially increased subsidized gasoline prices for most users in an effort to curb surging fuel demand.
