The cost of living has ranked as the leading concern among participants in a global survey for the fifth consecutive year, according to the fifth edition of the FII PRIORITY Compass Index, released by the Future Investment Initiative Foundation.

The survey, conducted in partnership with Ipsos and covering 61,200 adults across 32 countries, found that 56% of respondents identified the cost of living as their top national worry, followed by poverty and inequality at 38%, and unemployment at 36%. The findings reflect the ongoing impact of economic pressures on daily choices and family aspirations.

The results also revealed that 57% of participants believe living expenses and debt are barriers to having their desired number of children.

Princess Maha bint Mishari bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, CEO of the Future Investment Initiative Foundation, said:

"The index reveals shared concerns and unmet needs, with the cost of living remaining the top global priority for five years. It is crucial that the index serves as a key reference for investors and policymakers to guide policies and capital toward opportunities that deliver returns and improve people's lives."

Contrasting outlooks on the future

The survey highlighted a divide in optimism between the Global South and Global North; 47% of respondents in the Global South believe the world is heading in the right direction, compared to just 15% in the Global North.

AI and trust in media

The findings showed broad support for the benefits of artificial intelligence, coupled with strong calls for regulation. Sixty percent said AI had improved their lives, while 85% called for global regulation. Some 61% were comfortable with robots handling household chores, compared to 53% for elderly care.

Regarding child safety online, 51% supported requiring verified parental consent for those under 16 to use social media platforms, while 40% backed banning children's accounts altogether.

On media, most respondents trusted traditional outlets for accurate information, though 75% believed these sources are politically biased.
