Qatif fish markets see surge as 2026 shrimp season begins

Fish markets in Qatif, especially the central market on Fish Island, have seen a notable economic boost with the start of the 2026 shrimp fishing season. The arrival of boats loaded with shrimp has increased, fueling active wholesale auctions and a gradual rise in supply as the season gets underway.

The Eastern Province branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture recently announced the opening of the shrimp fishing season in Saudi waters of the Arabian Gulf at the start of August. The season will run until the end of January 2027. The ministry’s efforts aim to regulate and sustain the season, enhance food security, protect fish stocks, and support the national economy.

Regulatory efforts and sector support

The ministry branch confirmed that ports are fully prepared and that digital transformation of services for fishermen has been completed. Intensive monitoring plans are in place for ports, markets, and supply chains to ensure product quality and enforce regulations. The season also creates seasonal job opportunities in coastal cities.

According to the branch, initial indicators show an abundant supply, with catch volumes expected to increase gradually until mid-season before declining towards the end. The ministry continues to develop the fisheries and aquaculture sector to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

Shrimp varieties and market outlook

Meanwhile, several fish vendors expect larger quantities to reach the market in the coming days as fishing activity increases. They noted that shrimp are available in several varieties and colors, including white, red, and brown, each with qualities favored by consumers. Larger sizes are expected to appear gradually from September and continue through the end of January.
