Tarsheed boosts energy efficiency in Saudi public schools

The National Energy Services Company (Tarsheed) has contributed to improving energy efficiency and reducing consumption in government buildings, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and other relevant bodies, by upgrading energy efficiency in public schools across the Kingdom. This comes through a school rehabilitation program, extending Tarsheed’s role in enhancing energy use in public education buildings and supporting the sustainability goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

The program has involved rehabilitating more than 17,000 schools, replacing over 8.3 million lighting units with high-efficiency LED lamps, and installing more than 183,000 motion sensors. These measures have improved lighting systems and optimized energy consumption within educational facilities.

Tarsheed is also expanding its efforts to include clean energy initiatives by installing solar power systems for self-consumption in public schools. The company aims to achieve annual energy savings of about 500 million kilowatt-hours, equivalent to the environmental impact of planting more than 4.7 million seedlings each year and conserving around 800,000 barrels of oil equivalent annually.

The project was implemented by national professionals following precise operational plans that ensured the continuity of the educational process. Tarsheed supervised all stages of execution, including planning, field surveys, and operational follow-up across various regions of the Kingdom.

Waleed bin Abdullah Al-Ghreiri, board member and CEO of Tarsheed, stated that the public school rehabilitation program exemplifies one of the company’s core roles in enabling energy efficiency solutions in the government sector. He expressed pride in the achievements made in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders, which have improved efficiency in thousands of schools nationwide, supporting more sustainable and efficient learning environments and fostering a culture of efficiency for future generations, in line with Vision 2030 goals.

He added that energy efficiency solutions are integrated with solar power systems for self-consumption on school rooftops, targeting 5,200 schools to date. This enhances the use of renewable energy sources and supports energy sustainability in the education sector.

The National Energy Services Company, fully owned by the Public Investment Fund, leads efforts to develop the energy efficiency services sector in the Kingdom. It implements major projects to improve energy consumption in street lighting and government buildings, develops solar energy system solutions, and provides tailored energy efficiency solutions for the commercial and industrial sectors. These initiatives contribute to achieving Vision 2030 targets, promoting sustainability, reducing harmful emissions, and supporting the national economy.
