CST Announces Global Initiative to Develop Electronic Waste Management Regulations
The Communication, Space, and Technology Commission (CST) has announced the launch of the "Development of Electronic Waste Management Regulations" initiative, in cooperation with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The initiative will contribute to laying the foundation for developing regulations and standards to limit global electronic waste, which reaches a volume of 54 million tons per year, as 17% of it is recycled, contributing to reducing carbon emissions to 15 metric tons.
On a trial basis, the regulations will also be applied in Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Paraguay.
The initiative will help the Kingdom's endeavor to lead international efforts in digital sustainability, accelerate the shift toward green practices by implementing regulations that strengthen the circular economy, and offer innovative solutions to reduce e-waste for a sustainable digital future.
It is one of the outcomes of the agreement CST reached in June with ITU to develop and implement regulations that enable circular economy; the agreement was reached on the sidelines of the global symposium of telecommunication regulators held in Sharm El-Sheik in preparation for participation in COP28.
