A remarkable increase in the number of the transshipment containers in Saudi ports during the first quarter of 2019.
The Saudi ports, supervised by the Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI), have achieved an increase in the total number of transshipment containers during the first quarter of 2019 by 516 thousand containers, representing an increase of 1.14% compared to the same period of the previous year 2018 of 510 thousand containers.
According to the statistical index of MAWANI, the totalnumber of containers handled, during the same quarter, was 66,335,121 milliontons, an increase of 7.62%, while the number of exported and imported containersreached 1,682,806 million containers, an increase of 7.02% compared to the sameperiod of the previous year 2018.
The number of vessels in the Saudi ports during the firstquarter of 2019 reached 2,983 vessels, the number of passengers reached 320,191thousand passengers, the number of vehicles reached 162,071 thousand vehicles,and the number of livestock reached 1,664,725 Million head of livestock.
The Saudi ports achieved an increase in the total numberof transshipment containers only during the month of March 2019 by 166,389thousand container vessels, representing an increase of 8.72%, compared to thesame period of the previous year of 152,946 thousand containers.
Yanbu commercial port can be a best example as it achieved a significant growth in handlingoperations of 176%, through handling 1,394,918 tons of various general cargos withan increase of 505.625 tons in the first quarter of 2019. While in the sameperiod of 2018, the increase in the percentage of incoming ships to the portwas only 137%.
This increase in the total number of transshipment containers confirms theintegration of infrastructure, the increasing operational capacity andefficiency, as well as the advanced handling equipment in Saudi ports and easeof procedures. It also reflects the speed of loading and unloading operations.
This is in line with the efforts of MAWANI to enhance the services of the Saudi ports and to boost their performance, productivity, and operating and logistic costs as a part of the desirable objectives and pillars of Saudi Arabia Vision 2030.
